The Township’s animal control service provider, Associated Humane, recently responded to calls involving a sick fox and raccoon. The animals were found in the Township’s Brush and Leaf Collection Zones 3 and 4. Both animals were captured and test results confirmed they were positive for rabies.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
- Do NOT interact with wildlife under any circumstance. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and avoid all contact. Call Animal Control at 732-922-0100 immediately or if after regular business hours or on a weekend contact the Colts Neck Police Department at 732-462-4343.
- Make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats, and livestock) are up to date with a current rabies vaccination shot. Do not let your pets run free off leash, even in the woods, to ensure they do not come into contact with wildlife that may be rabid.
- Rabies is a fatal disease. The best course of defense is to vaccinate your pets and livestock and to not handle or interact with wildlife. If you are bitten or exposed to blood/saliva of an animal, contact your physician immediately. Contact your veterinarian if your pet was exposed to wildlife, even if previously vaccinated.
- All dogs must be licensed in the Township. A license can be obtained by going to the Township web site at coltsneck.org or visiting Town Hall 1 Veterans Way, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
